The 2025 Minnesota K-12 Data Visualization Poster Competition Sponsored by American Statistical Association (ASA) Twin Cities Chapter

The Minnesota K-12 Data Visualization Poster Competition is organized and hosted by the American Statistical Association (ASA) Twin Cities Chapter. This event aims to promote data visualization and communication skills among K-12 students—essential abilities in today’s increasingly data-driven world. Students from K-12 schools across Minnesota are invited to submit their posters electronically. An independent panel of judges, consisting of industrial and academic statisticians, will evaluate the submissions across four grade-level categories: K-3, 4-6, 7-9, and 10-12.You can find the criterion in our judging rubric. Winners in each grade category will be awarded prizes (details below), and will be sent to ASA’s national-level competition for further evaluation.

Submission Rules

  1. Students may work individually or in teams. For those in the K–3 category, there is no restriction on the size of the team. For other categories, the maximum number of students per team is four.

  2. For teams with members from different grade levels, the highest grade determines the entry category.

  3. Posters measure between 18 and 24 inches high and 24 and 30 inches wide.

  4. You will upload a photo/image file of a physical poster or a PDF file of a digitally created poster.

  5. If creating a digital poster, please follow the guidelines in the electronic poster tutorial.

  6. Include the grade category and title of your poster in your file name.

  7. Ensure the image/file is high enough quality that it can be zoomed in on and all text and graphics can be easily read.

  8. Make sure the poster gives no information that identifies the team or school.

  9. Each poster requires a separate online entry.

  10. Posters must be the original design and creation of the entrant(s).

  11. Computer graphics may be used.

  12. Subject matter is the choice of the participant(s) or their classmates.

  13. Brief supplementary information such as examples of original data, references for published data, brief descriptions of data collection procedures, and/or the purpose of the experiment may be provided in a text box in the online entry form. Do not copy and paste your actual data into the form. Please note this information might not be used in the judging, so make sure the main poster briefly provides sufficient information without being too text heavy (the updated judging criteria/rubric penalizes posters with too much text). Follow our judging rubric here.

  14. Posters must be uploaded by April 1.

  15. In submitting a poster, students agree the poster may be displayed at the ASA’s Joint Statistical Meetings, featured in its publications, and included on its website.

Prizes (for each grade category)

  • State-level First Prize: $50

  • State-level Second Prize: $40

  • State-level Third Prize: $30

  • All submissions receiving prizes will be further directed to the national competition of the ASA for the national prize.
